Jackson County

Located in northwest Florida’s Panhandle, Jackson County is Florida’s best kept secret. The county was established in 1822. And along with its long history comes plenty of good-old Southern hospitality.

This unspoiled terrain, framed by the states of Georgia and Alabama, hosts an abundance of wildlife, which include white-tailed deer, grey fox and bob-white quail. Much of Jackson County is still farmland and it is Florida’s leading producer of soybeans and peanuts. Beautiful Jackson County is comprised of 13-square miles of water. Flowing waterways, meandering streams, placid lakes and rolling rivers distinguish this pristine and serene landscape from its neighboring counties.  An additional unique feature found in Jackson County is its cavern system.

Jackson County is the only locale in the state that has organized walk-through underground tours. Last year Florida Caverns State Park received the first Wayne Mixson Economic Development Award to aid with its preservation. The Park welcomed nearly 95,000 visitors and added approximately $3.5 million into the Jackson County economy in one year alone. Besides caving, visitors to Florida Caverns State Park enjoy hiking, horseback riding and camping among woodpeckers, barred owls, beavers, alligators and snapping turtles. But, of course, the Park’s special attraction is the limestone stalactites and stalagmites found in its prehistoric caves.

Southern in spirit with ambling plantations and perfectly maintained antebellum homes, Jackson County’s history is preserved in its buildings and memorials, as well as its landscape. Sites of Civil War battles bring to life the county’s past. But Jackson County’s future and the county’s vision are what make the area truly exciting. Jackson County has developed a unified initiative called The Jackson County Vision, which is a 20-year blueprint for actions that the county is taking to enhance its residents’ lives.

Jackson County has also partnered with Opportunity Florida, which is an alliance of 8 counties. Opportunity Florida works to develop "opportunities for regional businesses and workers." The Jackson County community is striving to make its county the best that it can be. And it’s succeeding.

Jackson County has 5 elementary schools and 6 secondary schools.  Its colleges, universities and technical schools include Florida State University, Baptist College of Florida, Golf Coast Community College and Chipola College.

Its numerous hospitals include Bay Memorial Hospital, Capital Regional Medical Center, Flowers Hospital, Graceville/Campbellton Hospital and Jackson Hospital.

Less than an hour from major airports—Panama City/Bay County International Airport, Marianna Municipal Airport and Panama City Port Authority—Interstate 10 and U.S. Highways 231 and 90 lead to Tallahassee, Panama City and Dothan Alabama.

Jackson County cares about its neighbors in a truly Southern way.  In Jackson County, grace and charm sidle up beside responsible community planning and you have one heck of a great place to live.
